Ghana captain Jordan Ayew is set to leave the Black Stars camp after a scan confirmed a knee problem ahead of the team’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ayew arrived in Accra on Monday to join his teammates as Ghana prepares to face Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in the qualifiers.
However, the Leicester City forward reported discomfort in his knee and underwent medical examinations on Tuesday morning.
The scan subsequently revealed an injury that is expected to prevent him from featuring in the upcoming matches.
Ayew has reportedly discussed the situation with head coach Carlos Queiroz and is expected to be released from camp to begin his recovery.
His withdrawal adds to Ghana’s growing injury concerns, with the Black Stars already dealing with several absences during preparations for the qualifiers.
Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo and experienced defender Baba Rahman are among the players who have become unavailable to the technical team.
The latest setback means Queiroz will have to prepare Ghana for the crucial fixtures without the team’s captain and one of its most experienced players.
Ayew, 34, has been a key member of the Black Stars for more than a decade and has played a significant role in the national team.
Ghana will now hope the knee problem is not serious and that the veteran forward can recover quickly and return to action.
