Ghana’s U17 national team, the Black Starlets, are preparing for a crucial showdown against South Africa in Group D of the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
The team wrapped up their final training session on Tuesday under the guidance of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, who focused on tactical organisation, attacking movements, defensive coordination and set-piece execution ahead of the high-stakes encounter.
The Black Starlets have managed only one point from their opening two matches in the competition. Ghana started the tournament with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Algeria before falling to a slim 1-0 defeat against Senegal in their second outing.
A victory over South Africa would greatly strengthen Ghana’s chances of reaching the knockout stage while also keeping alive their dream of securing qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Despite the pressure surrounding the must-win fixture, morale within the camp remains high, with players showing strong commitment and determination during preparations.
Coach Ogum and his technical team are expected to demand discipline, composure and greater efficiency in front of goal against a South African side equally desperate for qualification.
Ghana have also received a major boost ahead of the game, with the entire squad available for selection and no injury concerns reported.
The players were further motivated by visits from Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku and former Ghana international Bernard Yao Kumordzi, who offered words of encouragement before the decisive clash.
The Black Starlets will now be aiming to deliver a strong performance and reignite their campaign at the continental tournament in Morocco.
