2026 FIFA World Cup: Adjetey and Opoku deliver defensive masterclass as Ghana edge Panama in World Cup opener

While Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic stoppage-time winner rightly grabbed the headlines, Ghana’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama was built on a rock-solid defensive display spearheaded by central defensive duo Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku.

The two defenders produced a commanding performance at the heart of the Black Stars’ backline, frustrating Panama throughout the contest and ensuring Ghana remained in the game long enough to find a late winner.

From the opening whistle, Adjetey and Opoku demonstrated exceptional concentration, composure and leadership. Panama attempted to stretch the Ghanaian defence with direct attacks and quick transitions, but the defensive partnership stood firm, repeatedly breaking up dangerous situations before they could develop into genuine scoring opportunities.

Adjetey, making his World Cup debut, played with the confidence and maturity of a seasoned tournament veteran. The defender was dominant in aerial duels, strong in one-on-one situations and calm whenever Ghana sought to build attacks from the back. His reading of the game allowed him to anticipate danger early, cutting out several Panamanian attacks before they threatened the Black Stars’ goal.

Alongside him, Opoku delivered an equally impressive display. The experienced defender marshalled the backline expertly, organising teammates and providing a reassuring presence throughout the match. His timing in tackles, positional awareness and ability to remain composed under pressure were instrumental in keeping Panama at bay.

The importance of their performance became even more evident after halftime when Ghana suffered the setback of losing first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi through injury. With debutant Benjamin Asare entering the game under immense pressure, Adjetey and Opoku took greater responsibility, shielding the goalkeeper and limiting Panama’s opportunities in dangerous areas.

Their communication and understanding ensured Ghana never lost its defensive structure despite the unexpected change between the posts.

As the game wore on and tension increased, the defensive duo continued to excel. Every clearance, interception and block helped maintain Ghana’s belief that a winning opportunity would eventually arrive.

That moment came deep into stoppage time when Brandon Thomas-Asante embarked on a brilliant run before setting up Caleb Yirenkyi for the decisive goal. While the match-winning strike sparked celebrations across Ghana, it would not have been possible without the defensive resilience that preceded it.

In a tournament where defensive solidity often determines success, Adjetey and Opoku sent a powerful message with their performances. They demonstrated the discipline, organisation and determination required to compete on football’s biggest stage.

Their masterclass display not only secured a clean sheet but also provided a strong foundation for Ghana’s World Cup campaign as the Black Stars prepare for a massive Group L showdown against England.

As Ghana celebrates a perfect start to the tournament, the contributions of Yirenkyi and Thomas-Asante will be remembered. But equally deserving of praise are Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku, whose defensive heroics laid the groundwork for one of Ghana’s most important World Cup victories in recent years.
