World Cup 2026 Preview: Scotland vs Morocco – Team News, Predicted Lineups, Kick-off Time and Prediction

A pivotal Group C showdown awaits on Friday at Gillette Stadium as Scotland take on Morocco in a clash that could shape the race for knockout qualification at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Scotland head into the fixture sitting top of the group with three points after a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti, while Morocco are close behind on one point following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brazil.

Match Preview

Scotland are within touching distance of history, knowing that victory on Friday could secure their first-ever progression to the knockout stage of a major international tournament.

A win would not only guarantee qualification for the round of 32 but could also see Steve Clarke’s side finish top of Group C, depending on Brazil’s result against Haiti.

Their opening win was far from convincing, but John McGinn’s first-half strike proved decisive against Haiti, underlining Scotland’s growing ability to manage tight games.

However, the stakes are now significantly higher. Scotland have never reached the knockout rounds at a major tournament, and Friday presents a chance to rewrite that long-standing record ahead of a final group match against Brazil.

The historical backdrop adds extra spice, with Morocco having defeated Scotland 3-0 in their only previous World Cup meeting back in 1998, a result that will still linger in the memory of the Tartan Army.

Morocco arrive in strong spirits after an impressive opening display against Brazil, where they took the lead through Ismael Saibari before being pegged back by a Vinícius Júnior equaliser.

Despite being held to a draw, the performance reinforced Morocco’s growing reputation as one of the tournament’s most dangerous sides.

Under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, the Atlas Lions have begun shifting towards a more possession-based style, moving away from the deep counter-attacking approach that defined their historic 2022 World Cup semi-final run.

Although still early in his tenure, Morocco’s structure and technical quality have already made them one of the tournament’s dark horses once again.

A victory on Friday would not mathematically confirm qualification, but it would place them in a commanding position ahead of their final group fixture against Haiti.

Team News

Scotland are expected to remain largely unchanged, although Scott McKenna remains a doubt with a calf issue. Steve Clarke is likely to stick with the same attacking setup despite mixed performances from Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland.

Key midfielders John McGinn and Scott McTominay will continue to provide the team’s engine room, while Ben Gannon-Doak is expected to retain his place on the right flank.

Morocco also look set to keep faith with the side that performed well against Brazil. Ismael Saibari, who scored in the opener, is expected to lead the attack once again, supported by Brahim Díaz and El Khannouss in advanced roles.

Predicted Lineups

Scotland: Gunn; Hickey, Hendry, Hanley, Robertson; Gannon-Doak, Ferguson, McTominay, McGinn; Adams, Shankland

Morocco: Bono; Hakimi, Diop, Riad, Mazraoui; El Aynaoui, Bouaddi; Díaz, Ounahi, El Khannouss; Saibari

Prediction

This promises to be a tightly contested encounter, with Scotland’s discipline and home-like support at Gillette Stadium set against Morocco’s technical quality and attacking depth.

However, the Atlas Lions’ experience and fluid attacking play could prove decisive in key moments.

Prediction: Scotland 1-2 Morocco
