Jerome Opoku was one of Ghana’s standout performers as the Black Stars secured a hard-fought goalless draw against England in their 2026 FIFA World Cup encounter. The centre-back delivered a commanding defensive display, combining physicality, composure, and excellent game awareness to frustrate England’s attack throughout the match.

Opoku finished the contest with 5 clearances, 1 interception, 2 recoveries, 1 tackle, and 1 block, but those numbers only tell part of the story. His influence was felt whenever England attempted to penetrate Ghana’s defensive line, as he consistently positioned himself well to cut out danger and win crucial duels.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his performance was his dominance in the air. Opoku won every aerial duel he contested, denying England opportunities to create chances from crosses, long balls, and set-piece situations. Against a team boasting strong and physical attackers, that achievement highlights just how commanding he was at the heart of Ghana’s defence.

The defender also showed remarkable concentration over the 90 minutes. He rarely put a foot wrong, stayed disciplined in his positioning, and communicated effectively with his defensive partners to maintain the Black Stars’ shape. Whenever England looked to increase the pressure, Opoku responded with timely clearances and intelligent defensive interventions.

His ability to remain calm under pressure was equally important. Rather than panicking when England pushed forward, he stayed composed, helping Ghana absorb waves of attacks while ensuring the defensive line remained organized. Such maturity and confidence are qualities every team needs from its central defenders on the biggest stage.

While some defenders shine through spectacular tackles and last-ditch challenges, Opoku’s display was built on consistency, anticipation, and winning his individual battles. It was the kind of performance that often goes underappreciated but is essential to securing clean sheets against elite opposition.

Rating: 8.5/10

Jerome Opoku was a defensive rock for Ghana. Winning every aerial duel, making crucial clearances, and remaining composed throughout the contest, he played a major role in keeping England scoreless. It was a performance that demonstrated leadership, resilience, and the qualities of a top-level centre-back.
