Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare saw his impressive run of clean sheets come to an end after conceding for the first time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Black Stars’ 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L encounter.

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper had enjoyed a dream start to his maiden World Cup campaign, keeping consecutive clean sheets in Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama and the hard-fought 0-0 draw against England. His commanding presence, crucial saves and calm distribution earned widespread praise as he emerged as one of the tournament’s standout goalkeepers during the group stage.

However, Croatia’s experienced attack finally found a way past the 32-year-old, scoring twice to end his unbeaten streak. Despite the two goals conceded, Asare produced several important saves throughout the match to keep Ghana in contention and prevent the scoreline from becoming more emphatic.

Although his run without conceding came to an end, Asare’s performances across the group stage remain one of Ghana’s biggest positives. He finished the opening phase with two clean sheets in three matches, conceding only twice while demonstrating composure, sharp reflexes and excellent command of his penalty area against some of the world’s best attacking players.

The defeat to Croatia may have ended Asare’s perfect defensive record, but it did not end Ghana’s World Cup journey. The Black Stars still secured qualification to the Round of 32, with Asare expected to remain a key figure as Otto Addo’s side prepares for the knockout stage. His consistency between the posts has strengthened Ghana’s belief that they can continue their remarkable campaign and challenge the world’s elite in the rounds ahead.
