Azzedine Ounahi produced a match-winning performance with two second-half goals as Morocco defeated Canada to book a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After surviving a difficult opening half in which Canada controlled much of the game and created several chances, Morocco came out with renewed energy after the break.
The breakthrough arrived in the 50th minute when Achraf Hakimi delivered a dangerous free-kick that found Ounahi outside the penalty area. The midfielder struck a powerful low shot into the bottom-right corner, leaving Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau with no chance and giving Morocco a crucial 1-0 lead.
Canada pushed forward in search of an equaliser but struggled to break down Morocco’s disciplined defence. Their hopes were finally dashed in the 82nd minute when Ounahi struck again, completing his brace and sealing a convincing victory for the North African side.
The win sends Morocco into the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between France and Paraguay.
Ounahi’s outstanding display ensured Morocco overcame a challenging first half and continued their impressive World Cup campaign, while Canada will be left to reflect on missed opportunities that proved costly in the knockout encounter.
