Ghanaian centre-back Sayibu Yakubu has completed a permanent transfer to Czech First League side MFK Karvina, signing a long-term contract after departing Finnish outfit SJK Seinajoki.
The 20-year-old successfully underwent his medical examination before putting pen to paper, with the deal finalized after all administrative processes were completed.
Yakubu travelled to the Czech Republic late last week and has wasted little time settling into his new surroundings, linking up with his teammates ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The promising defender has already caught the eye during pre-season preparations, impressing in training and in a friendly against Polish club Ruch Chorzow. He showcased his aerial dominance, composure on the ball, and even created a promising goalscoring opportunity.
Karvina sporting director Lubomir Vlk believes Yakubu possesses the qualities needed to thrive at the club and is confident the youngster will develop into a key player.
“We were looking for a defender who would fit into our playing philosophy, and Sayibu showed his qualities against Ruch Chorzow. He is still a young player, so we have to work with him. I believe he will adapt quickly and become a valuable addition to the team. I welcome him to the club and wish him good health and every success,” Vlk said.
Yakubu joins Karvina after spending just over a year with SJK Seinajoki, where he continued his development following his move to Finland in the spring of 2024.
The Ghanaian expressed his excitement after completing the move, revealing the transfer happened so quickly that he was unable to properly say goodbye to his teammates and friends in Finland.
“I am very happy to have joined my new team and I have really enjoyed my first training sessions and matches. The last few days have been hectic because I had to leave in a hurry, and I didn’t even have time to say goodbye to everyone in Finland. I am here to help Karvina win and I am looking forward to making new friends,” Yakubu said.
The move represents another important milestone in Yakubu’s career as he looks to establish himself in the Czech top flight. Karvina will be hoping the Ghanaian’s physicality, defensive intelligence, and potential add greater solidity to their backline ahead of the new league season.
