The Black Satellites brought their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign to a close after a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Togo in their final Group B fixture at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday.
In a match Ghana needed to win to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive, the Black Satellites produced one of their most assured performances of the tournament. Maxwell Konadu’s side controlled large spells of the contest, created the better scoring opportunities and looked to have found the breakthrough, only for their effort to be ruled out.
The result leaves Ghana third in Group B with two points from three matches, following defeats to Nigeria, a spirited draw against Burkina Faso and Sunday’s stalemate against Togo.
Although the Black Satellites were unable to progress beyond the group stage, the tournament offered several encouraging signs. The players demonstrated resilience, character and attacking intent throughout the competition while gaining valuable experience against some of West Africa’s strongest youth teams.
Head coach Maxwell Konadu also used the championship to assess his squad under competitive conditions, providing opportunities for several players to stake their claim as preparations continue for future assignments.
With Ghana already assured of a place at the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as hosts, the WAFU B U-20 Championship has served as an important building block in the team’s long-term development.
The competition has strengthened team cohesion, exposed the squad to high-level international football and provided invaluable lessons that will help shape the Black Satellites ahead of hosting Africa’s premier youth football tournament next year.
While the campaign ended earlier than anticipated, the experience gained in Côte d’Ivoire is expected to prove invaluable as the technical team continues to mould a competitive side capable of challenging for continental honours on home soil in 2027.
