Ghana defender Abdul Mumin has emerged as a transfer target for English Championship side Southampton and Turkish giants Besiktas as the 28-year-old considers his next move following his departure from Rayo Vallecano.
Mumin is currently a free agent after his contract with the Spanish club expired, making him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen their defence without paying a transfer fee.
The Ghana international joined Rayo Vallecano in 2022 from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães in a deal reportedly worth around €1.5 million.
His time in Spain was disrupted by a serious knee injury. Mumin suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March 2025, ruling him out of action for almost a year.
He eventually returned to competitive football last season but made only three appearances for Rayo, accumulating 78 minutes and starting one match.
Despite his limited involvement, his return to fitness helped put him back in contention for the Ghana national team.
Mumin was included in Ghana’s squad for the most recent FIFA World Cup but did not make an appearance during the tournament.
Southampton and Besiktas are now understood to be monitoring the experienced centre-back, with both clubs attracted by his physical qualities, defensive ability and experience in European football.
A move to either club would give Mumin an opportunity to revive his career and secure regular playing time after his progress was interrupted by injury.
Southampton could offer him the opportunity to continue his career in England, while a switch to Besiktas would see him take on a new challenge in the Turkish top flight.
With interest developing from both clubs, Mumin’s next destination is expected to become clearer as negotiations over his future progress.
