Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has revealed that Ghana legend Michael Essien was the biggest African player he shared the pitch with during his illustrious career.
The Nigerian international, who spent over a decade at Stamford Bridge, played alongside Essien during Chelsea’s dominant era under managers including José Mourinho, forming part of a powerful midfield unit that won multiple major trophies.
Mikel and Essien featured together for Chelsea from 2006 to 2014, making numerous appearances side by side as the club secured two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2012.
Speaking about his African football experiences, Mikel said: “Michael Essien is the biggest African player I have played with.”
He also highlighted some of Ghana’s other football greats he faced during his career, adding: “I have played against top Ghanaian players like André Ayew, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan.”
Essien, widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest midfielders, became a Chelsea icon with his power, versatility and defensive ability, while Ayew, Appiah and Gyan all enjoyed memorable international and club careers that earned them global recognition.
