Ghana captain Jordan Ayew made his first appearance for Sheffield United on Sunday as the Blades suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Championship.
Ayew was introduced after the break, replacing Ben Brereton Díaz as manager Chris Wilder sought to add more attacking threat to his team.
The Ghanaian forward immediately showed his willingness to influence the match, sending an early effort wide shortly after coming onto the pitch.
Sheffield United had competed well throughout the game and matched Wolves for much of the contest, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities.
The match appeared destined to end in a goalless draw until Wolves found the breakthrough in the final minute of normal time.
Raúl Jiménez scored the decisive goal after Kieran Trippier created an opportunity at the back post. Doyle’s effort took a deflection and fell kindly for Jiménez, who reacted quickly to finish from close range.
The late goal condemned Sheffield United to a disappointing defeat after their encouraging midweek victory over Blackburn Rovers.
Wilder had made four changes to the starting lineup for the Wolves clash, bringing in McGuinness, Arblaster, Bamford and Phillips.
Ayew started the match among the substitutes before getting his opportunity in the second half.
The 35-year-old joined Sheffield United as a free agent following the end of his contract with Leicester City, adding significant experience to the Blades squad.
During his career, Ayew has represented several clubs, including Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
He also captained Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting all four matches played by the Black Stars at the tournament.
Ayew will now aim to build on his debut appearance and compete for a starting position as Sheffield United continue their Championship campaign.
