Former Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has revealed that his decision to leave the club was not influenced by the team’s recent performances or results.
The South African coach’s departure was confirmed by the Porcupine Warriors on Monday after both parties agreed to terminate his contract, bringing an end to his short stay in Kumasi.
Tinkler, however, insists his resignation had already been decided before Kotoko’s 2-0 defeat against Aduana FC in the Ghana Premier League and was unrelated to the disappointing result.
Speaking to Kotoko’s media team after the match, the 54-year-old clarified that the defeat played no role in his decision.
“I have handed in my resignation but it has nothing to do with performance. It had nothing to do with the result against Aduana Stars. This was a decision I had already made last week. This is the world of football,” Tinkler said.
The former Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates coach explained that an attractive offer from South Africa was the main reason behind his decision to end his tenure with the Ghanaian giants.
“I was given a good offer to go back to a club in South Africa, and that is the main reason why I’ve made the decision that I have,” he added.
Tinkler is reportedly set to return to South African football, with Premier Soccer League side Durban City emerging as his next destination following their recent coaching vacancy.
The experienced tactician joined Kotoko ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season with expectations of leading the club to domestic success. Although his league campaign ended prematurely, he guided the Porcupine Warriors to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup after defeating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak on penalties.
His exit leaves Kotoko searching for a new head coach just weeks into the league season as the club looks to restore stability and continue its push for major honours.
