Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has criticised the lack of leadership and togetherness within the Black Stars following their disappointing 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Johnson, who earned 50 caps for Ghana, believes unity should go beyond pre-match displays, insisting players must support and motivate each other during matches.
“Dancing in the team alone doesn’t bring unity. It’s about encouraging each other on the pitch rather than arrogantly scolding when there’s a mistake. There’s no leadership in the Black Stars,” Johnson said, according to Sporty FM.
The Black Stars suffered a major setback at the Accra Sports Stadium after surrendering a two-goal advantage against The Gambia.
Ghana looked comfortable after goals from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Ohene Afena-Gyan gave them a 2-0 lead, but the visitors staged a remarkable comeback to win 4-2.
The defeat marked Ghana’s second straight loss in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, leaving the team under pressure to revive their campaign.
Johnson believes stronger leadership, accountability and genuine support among players are needed if the Black Stars are to overcome their current struggles.
