Suspended National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah says the authority requires additional support and resources to effectively manage Ghana’s sporting facilities.
Ampofo Ankrah, reflecting on his 18-month tenure at the NSA, highlighted challenges surrounding the maintenance of stadia and other sports infrastructure across the country.
Speaking to JoySports, he argued that the NSA should not be solely responsible for managing all of Ghana’s sporting facilities without the necessary structures and funding.
“After a year and six months, it is clear that we at the NSA need help. It would be a great mistake to say that the NSA has to manage all these facilities on its own, which is what has been happening,” he said.
He added:
“I did not come into office to find a maintenance fund or a maintenance department.”
His comments come amid growing concerns over the condition and upkeep of Ghana’s major sports venues, particularly facilities used for national team matches.
Ampofo Ankrah was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on October 1, 2026, pending a Criminal Investigation Department investigation into allegations linked to a visa facilitation arrangement connected to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Following his suspension, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong was appointed Acting NSA Director-General to oversee the authority’s operations.
Ampofo Ankrah’s remarks have renewed discussions about the need for sustainable funding, dedicated maintenance systems and improved management structures for Ghana’s sports infrastructure.
