Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston says competition level and regular playing time would be key factors in selecting players for the Black Stars if he gets the opportunity to coach the national team.
Kingston, who has expressed his interest in taking charge of Ghana’s senior national team, outlined his selection philosophy in an interview with 3 Sports.
The former midfielder believes players must be competing at a high level to earn national team recognition, while those outside the top leagues must show exceptional quality.
“First of all, which level are you playing in? Your team and the level of league that you are playing, competition that you are playing in,” Kingston said.
He added that playing for a club alone should not guarantee a call-up, insisting that regular minutes and current form must also be considered.
“A senior national team player should be playing. Unless if you are outside top 10 leagues, you must be extraordinary.”
Kingston further stressed the importance of players being active contributors at club level rather than simply being part of a squad.
“Are the players regular, playing actively, not making the squad, but getting minutes? Starting, getting minutes, we can work out and look at the form of the players.”
The former Black Stars midfielder has continued to build his coaching career after retirement and remains among the names linked with the vacant Ghana coaching position.
