GFA has no hand in Black Stars coaching selection, Henry Asante Twum insists

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, has insisted that the association has no hand in the selection process for the next head coach of the senior national football team, the Black Stars, expressing confidence in the competence of the committee responsible for the search.

Asante Twum made the remarks during an appearance on Akoma Sports on October 19, 2026, as attention continues to focus on the search for a new coach to lead Ghana’s senior national team.

According to him, the committee has the necessary competence to undertake the assignment, suggesting that its members should be allowed to carry out their responsibilities in identifying a suitable candidate for the vacant coaching position.

“The GFA has no hand in the selection process for the next Black Stars coach, the search committee has the competence to do their work,” Asante Twum stated.

His comments come at a critical time for Ghanaian football, with supporters and stakeholders eager to see the appointment of a coach capable of restoring the Black Stars’ competitive strength and improving the team’s results in major international competitions.

The coaching search has attracted considerable attention because of the importance of the position and the expectations surrounding the national team. Ghana’s football supporters want a technically sound and experienced manager who can build a competitive squad, improve the team’s tactical organisation and restore confidence among players and fans.

Asante Twum’s statement places particular emphasis on the role of the search committee and its ability to identify the right candidate. By distancing the GFA from the selection process, he has sought to underline the committee’s responsibility for conducting the search and carrying out the work entrusted to it.

The five-member committee is chaired by former GFA Vice-President Fred Pappoe and includes Anthony Baffoe, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, legal practitioner and football administrator Agbesi Dzakpasu, and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah. The members were selected to bring different areas of expertise to the recruitment process.

The committee’s task is to identify, assess and recommend a suitable candidate for the vacant position. The recruitment process has been extended to allow further evaluation, interviews, background checks and consultations with football stakeholders before a final recommendation is submitted.

This approach is particularly important given the pressure on the Black Stars to improve after their disappointing opening results in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire away from home and suffered a 4-2 defeat against The Gambia in Accra, leaving the team without a point from its first two matches.

The next coach will face the challenge of rebuilding the team’s confidence, improving tactical discipline, identifying the right players and developing a consistent style of play. There will also be expectations for the coach to strengthen the relationship between the national team and the domestic football community.

The GFA has also announced an interim technical team led by Kim Lars Björkegren, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram as assistants and Fatawu Dauda as goalkeepers’ coach, to oversee preparations for the November international fixtures while the search continues.

For now, Asante Twum’s message is one of confidence in the committee’s ability to complete its assignment. His exact words remain central to the discussion:

“The GFA has no hand in the selection process for the next Black Stars coach, the search committee has the competence to do their work.”

The success of the process will ultimately depend on the quality of the recommendation and the ability of the appointed coach to deliver results. With Ghanaian supporters demanding a stronger and more consistent Black Stars side, the committee faces a responsibility that extends beyond filling a coaching vacancy to helping establish a clear direction for the future of the national team.
