Hearts of Oak will be aiming to climb to the top of the Ghana Premier League when they welcome Basake Holy Stars to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday, October 23.
The Phobians head into the encounter sitting second on the league table with 14 points, level with the leaders but behind on goal difference. A win would give them the opportunity to take over first place and strengthen their early-season title ambitions.
Hearts of Oak have found some consistency in recent weeks, recording back-to-back victories for the second time this season. Their latest success was a narrow 1-0 away win over Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex last weekend.
The Accra-based side have recorded two wins, two draws and one defeat in their last five league matches, with their defensive organisation emerging as one of their biggest strengths. After seven games, they have scored eight goals and conceded just twice, making them one of the most difficult teams to break down in the competition.
Their home form has also been encouraging. Hearts remain unbeaten at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium this season, having secured two victories and a draw from three matches. They have scored five goals at the venue without conceding, a record they will be eager to maintain against the visitors.
However, the Phobians face a potentially difficult assignment against a side that has proved troublesome in their previous meetings. Hearts have failed to win either of their two home encounters with Basake Holy Stars, recording one draw and one defeat without scoring a goal. Ending that run will be an additional motivation for the hosts as they seek a third consecutive victory.
Basake Holy Stars, meanwhile, will travel to Accra with confidence after moving into fifth position on the league table. Their 1-0 victory over Bechem United last weekend took their points tally to 12 and extended their impressive start to the campaign.
The Ayinase-based club have won four of their seven league matches, a total that no other team had matched ahead of Friday’s fixture. With five goals scored and seven conceded, they have demonstrated an ability to grind out results, collecting three victories in their last five matches.
Despite their impressive overall form, their performances away from home remain a major concern. Basake Holy Stars have lost all three of their away matches this season, scoring just once and conceding seven goals. Improving their record on the road will be crucial if they hope to frustrate Hearts and return home with a positive result.
The visitors can nevertheless draw encouragement from their previous encounters with the Phobians. Since earning promotion to the Premier League for the 2024/25 season, Basake Holy Stars have recorded one win and one draw against Hearts of Oak, underlining their ability to compete against the former Ghanaian champions.
Friday’s contest therefore presents contrasting challenges for both sides. Hearts will look to capitalise on their solid home form and defensive strength to claim the points needed to move to the top of the table, while Basake Holy Stars will hope to overcome their away struggles and maintain their position among the early-season contenders.
