Asante Kotoko reclaimed the top spot in the Ghana Premier League after edging past Berekum Chelsea with a hard-fought 1-0 victory on Wednesday.
The Porcupine Warriors had to dig deep to secure the crucial win in an outstanding week 21 fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when defender Daniel Adjetey produced a moment of brilliance, firing a powerful strike from inside the box to break the deadlock against the run of play.
Despite late pressure from Chelsea, Kotoko remained resolute, holding on to secure all three points. The victory moves them back to the top of the table with 45 points, one ahead of Gold Stars, who sit in second place after 24 matches.
Head coach of Kotoko, Prosper Narteh Ogum, reflected on the game’s intensity and praised his team’s resilience.
“A very physical game, very energy-sapping. Berekum Chelsea were going for direct balls, the long balls, very good in the air, they had aerial supremacy. They can win the balls so it was making the game a lot physical.
“But we tried to keep the ball and then we got the goal. It was a game of two good sides that played. We are happy, everybody is happy, and I think it is a good thing for us,” he said in his post-match comments.
Kotoko’s victory extends their unbeaten run to six league games, securing back-to-back wins in the process. Their tally of 45 points keeps them one step ahead of Gold Stars after 24 matches this season.
