Doubts over the tactical direction of Otto Addo have intensified following Ghana’s heavy defeat to Austria national football team on Friday, March 27, a performance that exposed the Ghana national football team across all areas of the pitch.

The Black Stars were second best from start to finish, raising fresh concerns about their readiness to compete against elite opposition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With a daunting clash against Germany national football team looming, pressure is mounting on Addo and his technical team.

Another disappointing result could further complicate his position, even though a managerial change so close to the World Cup remains unlikely. Still, as football often proves, situations can shift quickly.

Amid the growing scrutiny, several names have emerged as potential replacements should the Ghana Football Association decide to act.

5. Winfried Schäfer – Experience and Stability

The veteran German tactician offers a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of African football. Currently serving within Ghana’s technical structure, Schäfer represents a low-risk, short-term option capable of bringing stability if needed.

4. Kwesi Appiah – The Familiar Choice

A return to Appiah would reflect a “Sankofa” approach—going back to a known and trusted figure. Having previously managed Ghana, he understands the expectations and pressures. However, his ongoing project with Sudan national football team could make any move difficult.

3. Tom Saintfiet – The African Specialist

Saintfiet’s extensive experience across African national teams makes him a strong candidate. Known for his disciplined and structured approach, he could provide the organisation Ghana currently lacks.

2. Kim Lars Björkgren – The Modern Option

The Swedish coach has impressed with the Ghana women’s national football team, leading them to a third-place finish at WAFCON. His tactical approach and emphasis on modern football could offer a fresh direction, though such a move would be bold.

1. Hervé Renard – The Dream Appointment

Renard stands out as the most high-profile option. With a proven track record in African football and success on the international stage, he would represent a statement appointment. However, his current role with Saudi Arabia national football team and contractual situation could pose challenges.
