Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah cost us 1992 AFCON- Nii Odartey Lamptey

Former Black Stars forward, Nii Odartey Lamptey, has revealed that the pair of Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah cost Ghana the 1992 AFCON.

Ghana reached the 1992 AFCON final in convincing fashion but fell short on penalties against eventual winners Ivory Coast.

Abedi Pele missed the final. Lamptey thinks his absence coupled with a tussle over leadership caused the defeat.

“I was with Tony who was my roommate because I was an Ashanti boy. When it comes to professional, I was in Europe with Abedi others. The problem was that everybody wanted to be a leader and that caused us the tournament. That thing caused our downfall. If Abedi was in the final, we would have won it. On the pitch they were cool but off the pitch, it was different.” He told the Ernest Bruce Smith Show.

Ghana last won an AFCON trophy in the 1980s. They have won the trophy four times.
