Nigerian central midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi has withdrawn from the imminent AFCON 2023 as a result of an injury he has sustained at Leicester City. He was not part of the Leicester City team that thrashed Huddersfield 4-1 in New Year in the championship.
The 27-year-old was part of Peseiro’s plans for the AFCON as he has been a cog in Nigeria’s midfield since the 2019 AFCON.
Ndidi’s absence is a big blow as Nigeria is weak in the central midfield role as Henry Onyeka and Alex Iwobi is certain to partner for Peseiro in Ivory Coast.
Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro has called up Royal Antwerp midfielder Alhassan Yusuf, who was named in the provisional 55-man AFCON squad, to join the main squad.
The Super Eagles will play in Group A alongside Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast and Guinea Bissau.
