Algeria star Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced winger and captain was in action when the North African outfit succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the round 32, bringing an end to their World Cup participation.

After the match, the former Manchester City star confirmed his retirement from international football, stating that the defeat against Switzerland marks his final appearance in the famous green shirt.

“That was my last match for the national team,” Mahrez told beIN Sports in an interview.

His departure closes one of the most influential international careers in Algerian football history, defined by leadership, creativity, and moments of individual brilliance on the biggest stages.

Mahrez’s journey with the Fennecs spanned more than a decade, during which he became the central figure of Algeria’s attacking identity. Across 119 international appearances, he scored 40 goals and registered 45 assists, consistently serving as both a creator and finisher for his country.

His impact extended beyond statistics. Mahrez became the symbolic leader of a generation that carried Algeria back to continental prominence and global relevance.

The peak of his international career came in 2019, when he captained Algeria to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations 2019. His leadership throughout the tournament was widely praised, as Algeria lifted the trophy for the second time in their history, cementing his status as one of the nation’s greatest-ever players.

Algeria’s exit in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup proved to be the final chapter in Mahrez’s international journey. While the team showed moments of quality during the tournament, they were ultimately unable to progress further, bringing disappointment but also reflection on a long era led by their captain.

For Mahrez, the tournament represented a final opportunity to add another major international achievement to his résumé, but instead it became the moment he chose to step away.

Mahrez’s influence on Algerian football stretches far beyond goals and assists. He emerged as a rare talent capable of changing games at the highest level, blending technical elegance with decisive end product. His performances at both club and international level helped elevate the global perception of Algerian footballers.

He also served as a role model for younger generations, inspiring a wave of North African players making their way into Europe’s top leagues.

At his peak, Mahrez was one of Africa’s most recognisable footballers, combining success at club level with consistent impact for his national team.

With Mahrez’s retirement, Algeria now face a significant transition phase. The national team will need to identify new leadership figures capable of filling the creative and emotional void left by their long-time captain.

His departure marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a rebuilding process as the Fennecs look to reshape their squad for future continental and World Cup campaigns.

Few players have shaped Algerian football as profoundly as Riyad Mahrez. From his rise as an underdog talent to becoming captain of a continental champion, his journey reflects both resilience and excellence.

As he steps away from international duty, Mahrez leaves behind a legacy defined by trophies, records, and unforgettable moments—securing his place among the greatest players in Algeria’s football history.

The 35-year-old attacker made 119 appearances for Algeria since his debut in 2014, scoring 40 goals across the period.
