Ghanaian duo Mary Amponsah and Comfort Yeboah have been shortlisted for the best young player of the 2023 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.
The two players, who play for reigning Ghana Women’s Premier League champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies, were nominated for the prestigious accolade following their exploits in the 2023 football calendar season.
Amponsah was adjudged the Most Valuable Player and golden shoe at the 2023 WAFU Zone B Women’s Champions League qualifiers after bagging seven goals to help her side clinch the trophy in Nigeria.
She won the top scorer and best player award at the Ghana FA Awards following her scintillating performance last season where her 16 goals in nineteen matches aided Ampem Darkoa Ladies to win the Women’s Premier League and FA Cup competition.
Yeboah is also one of the best full-backs on the continent, and her recent performance earned her a debut call-up to the senior national team of Ghana [Black Queens] under Coach Nora Hauptle in the 2024 Olympics Games qualifiers.
Nigerian trio Esther Ajakaye, Deborah Abiodun, and Oluwatosin Demehin have been nominated in the same category with Nesryne El Chad (Morocco), Hapsatou Diallo (Senegal), Thubelihle Shamase (South Africa), Winifreda Gerald (Tanzania), and Ugandan star Fauzia Najjemba.
Black Queens attacking midfielder Evelyn Badu won the CAF Young Player of the Year Award last year after a remarkable season with Hasaacas Ladies.
The ultimate winner of the category will be decided after votes from a voting panel consisting of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, Head Coaches & Captains of Member Associations, and clubs involved in the group stages of the Interclub competitions.
This year’s edition of the CAF Awards Gala is scheduled for December 11, 2023, in Marrakech, Morocco.
