Former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Ange Postecoglou, has disintegrated the club by claiming they are not as big as they claim.
The club sacked the Australian-Greek manager after he led them to the Europa League glory last season when they finished 16th in the Premier League.
It seems Postecoglu is still not over the sacking after ripping the North London side apart when he was interviewed on the Stick to Football podcast.
“They’ve built an unbelievable stadium, unbelievable training facilities, but when you look at the expenditure, particularly in their wage structure, they’re not a big club. I saw that because when we were trying to sign players, we weren’t in the market for those players, Ange revealed”.
“There are certain players … at the end of my first year, when we finished fifth. For me, OK, how do you go from fifth to really challenging? Well, we had to sign Premier League-ready players. But finishing fifth that year didn’t get us Champions League. We didn’t have the money”, he continued.
“So we ended up with Dom Solanke, who, absolutely, I was really keen on him, and three teenagers. I was looking at Pedro Neto, Mbeumo and Semenyo at the time. Marc Guéhi. Because I said if we’re going to go from fifth to there, that’s what the other big clubs would do in that moment. And those three teenagers are outstanding young players, and they will be brilliant players for Tottenham. But they’re not going to get you from fifth to fourth and third. But what was coming out from the club was, ‘no, we’re a club that can compete on all fronts’.”
Postecoglu recounted how the club failed to get him Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo, English defender Marc Guehi, Portuguese winger Pedro Neto and Bryan Mbeumo of Cameroon. These players undoubtedly would have improved Tottenham Hotspur, but three teenagers were bought for him.
Tottenham Hotspur is in the market for a new coach after sacking Thomas Frank, who replaced Postecoglou before the commencement of the current season.
