The absence of Ghana Premier League players in Chris Hughton’s 25-man squad for the Black Stars, according to Annor Walker, is due to Ghana’s poor performance at the 2022 CHAN tournament in Algeria.
There are questions about the calibre of the local top-tier league after no local player made the cut for Ghana’s squad ahead of the 2023 AFCON qualifications.
The Black Galaxies of Ghana competed in the CHAN competition earlier this year in Algeria, where they lost to Niger 2-0 in the quarterfinal stage.
Speaking to Peace FM, Walker thinks that Hughton’s choice to omit any domestic player could be linked to the disappointing performance in Algeria.
“It could be so, if we had won the trophy, definitely he would have asked or would have contacted the technical team so we recommend one or two players to the senior national team.”
“The coach did the call-ups, maybe he doesn’t know much about the locally-based players, especially with the CHAN team.”
Danlad Ibrahim of Asante Kotoko and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Hearts of Oak’s former man who currently plays for FC Zurich in Switzerland, were the only local players selected for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup under former coach Otto Addo.
