Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was the hero for the Phobians on Sunday, producing a series of crucial saves to help his side secure a narrow 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Asante Kotoko in Week 22 of the Ghana Premier League at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars’ first-choice shot-stopper was named Man of the Match after keeping a clean sheet in a tightly contested Super Clash, highlighting his importance in the team’s title aspirations.
Speaking after the match, Asare credited his teammates for their relentless effort and focus.
“Although we have gotten the victory today, the Ghana Premier League is not easy. Our goal-scoring ability has been low, but in this match, we were determined to get a win. I will continue to do my job whenever I’m in post,” he said.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper emphasized that the team’s discipline and unity were key to overcoming Kotoko, despite the tough challenges on the pitch.
Asare also reminded fans and teammates that the race for the championship is far from over, urging consistency and determination in the upcoming matches.
“If you look at the league, any team in the top five can win the league. It’s all about determination on the field. Winning the league will be a great opportunity for us. After beating Kotoko, we have to stay aggressive in our upcoming matches to ensure we keep winning,” he added.
The win lifts Hearts of Oak to third place on the Ghana Premier League table with 39 points, narrowing the gap to leaders Medeama SC to just five points. With momentum on their side, the Phobians are well-positioned to maintain pressure at the top as the season enters its crucial stages.
