Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan could enter the race for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency ahead of next year’s election.
The country’s all-time leading goalscorer has emerged as a potential candidate following reports that incumbent president Kurt Okraku is likely not to contest for a third term in office.
The development comes after the GFA amended its statutes and constitution at the 2025 Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, extending the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.
The amendment had fuelled speculation that Okraku, who also serves as the second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), would seek another term.
However, his leadership has come under increased scrutiny following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Ghana also failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, missing the tournament for the first time in more than two decades.
With uncertainty surrounding Okraku’s future, Gyan has emerged as a potential contender for the GFA’s top job, although he is yet to officially declare his intention to contest.
The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker remains Ghana’s record goalscorer and Africa’s leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup. He has held several roles under Okraku’s administration and currently serves as an ambassador for Ghana’s national teams.
Several other individuals have already been linked with the presidential race, including football administrator Samuel Annim Addo, former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah, Karela United chief executive Elloeny Amande and former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew.
Anim Addo , who has served on the GFA Executive Council, is involved in club football and manages Gyan.
Gyambrah brings experience in regional football administration, having previously chaired the Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association.
Amande, meanwhile, heads Karela United and has previously contested for a position on the GFA Executive Council without success.
Ayew, a member of Ghana’s 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning team, enjoyed a lengthy career in club and international football. He currently serves as chief executive officer of Nania FC.
A former GFA vice-president is also expected to join the contest, potentially adding to an increasingly competitive field.
It remains unclear whether Gyan, who played at several World Cups and AFCONs will formally enter the race as prospective candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the election.
The GFA is yet to announce the official timetable and nomination process for the presidential election.
