Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has opened up on his World Cup legacy, striking a reflective tone as he challenged the next generation to eclipse his historic milestone on football’s biggest stage.

Gyan remains Africa’s all-time top scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals, a record that has stood as a benchmark of continental excellence since his final appearance at the tournament in 2014.

Yet, rather than guard the accolade, the former Black Stars captain is urging young Ghanaian talents to aim higher.

“For me, records are set to be broken. So, personally, I count myself lucky to be at that level, to score six goals in World Cup history. The only African to score six goals in World Cup history.”

“And yes, the record is there to be broken. So I wish this new generation well, to perform so well. One might come up and break the record,” he added.

Gyan’s World Cup journey spanning from Germany 2006 through to Brazil 2014 remains one of the most prolific by an African forward.

His goals were not just numbers, but moments that carried a nation’s hopes, from dramatic group-stage strikes to defining contributions in Ghana’s historic run to the quarter-finals in 2010.

As Ghana continues to rebuild and nurture emerging talents, Gyan’s message lands as both a challenge and a blessing for the Black Stars.
