In a thrilling encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Asante Kotoko staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Nsoatreman 2-1 and claim the prestigious J.A Kufuor Cup on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
The highly anticipated match began with both teams sporting similar yellow kits. However, in the 25th minute, the game was briefly paused to allow Kotoko to change into white jerseys for better visibility and distinction.
Despite a goalless first half, the intensity escalated in the second period. Nsoatreman struck first with Abdul Rahman finding the net to put his side in the lead.
However, Kotoko responded swiftly, with Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala leveling the score in the 57th minute.
Nsoatreman had a chance to regain the lead from the penalty spot, but Kotoko’s goalkeeper Frederick Asare denied Manaf Umar’s spot-kick, keeping the scoreline level.
In the 67th minute, Kotoko completed their comeback as Peter Amidu capitalized on a precise pass from Richmond Lamptey to secure the winning goal, sending the home crowd into jubilation.
The match, organized by the JAK Foundation, served as a fitting tribute to the legacy of former Ghana President John Agyekum Kufuor, honoring his contributions to the nation during his two terms in office from 2000 to 2008.
