Asante Kotoko keep title hopes alive with convincing win over Dreams FC

Asante Kotoko strengthened their push for the Ghana Premier League title with a solid display against a struggling Dreams FC side in a Week 31 fixture of the 2024/25 season.

The Porcupine Warriors took control of the match early, dominating possession and keeping Dreams FC pinned in their half for much of the opening half-hour. Their efforts paid off in the 15th minute when Patrick Asiedu delivered a precise pass into the box, which Albert Amoah expertly volleyed home to give Kotoko the lead.

Dreams FC had two chances to respond but were denied by Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, who produced a fine double save in the 28th minute to preserve the lead.

Kwame Opoku thought he had doubled Kotoko’s advantage in the 30th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. However, Kotoko continued to dominate, and their pressure bore fruit again in the 40th minute. Saaka Dauda made a powerful run down the right flank and found Opoku in the area, who made no mistake this time, putting Kotoko 2-0 up before halftime.

Dreams FC briefly threatened a comeback early in the second half, as Jonathan Nemorden reduced the deficit in the 50th minute with a well-taken goal. But Kotoko quickly reasserted their dominance just six minutes later when Opoku scored his second of the match, restoring the two-goal cushion at 3-1.

The Porcupine Warriors sealed the victory in the 71st minute when Nigerian forward Fernando Wisdom Bassey pounced on a goalkeeping error by Richmond Ayi to net Kotoko’s fourth and final goal of the afternoon.

Following this emphatic 4-1 win, Kotoko remain in 4th place on the league table with 54 points—level with Heart of Lions and Nations FC. However, Nations FC could climb back to the summit if they secure a win against Legon Cities on Monday. Gold Stars currently top the standings with 56 points, benefiting from a walkover win against the now-defunct Nsoatreman FC.

Meanwhile, in another key Week 31 clash, Accra Hearts of Oak earned a vital away win at Golden City Park, edging Berekum Chelsea 1-0. Mawuli Wayo’s strike in the 56th minute proved decisive, lifting the Phobians to 5th place on 49 points.
