Asante Kotoko open talks with UK-based coach Chris Baffour-Akoto for permanent role

Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko are reportedly in advanced and encouraging discussions over a move for UK-born Ghanaian coach Chris Baffour-Akoto as the club continues its search for a permanent head coach.

The 25-time league champions are keen to stabilise their technical direction following a turbulent campaign, with sources indicating that Baffour-Akoto has emerged as a leading candidate for the role after recently leaving Luxembourg side Titus Petange due to work permit complications.

Although discussions are progressing positively, the Kumasi-based club are said to be in no rush to finalise their decision as they carefully assess all options before making an appointment.

Kotoko ended the just-concluded season with Hamza Obeng serving as interim head coach following the departure of Karim Zito and his assistant Prince Yaw Owusu, who both stepped down after a series of poor results.

The club eventually finished eighth on the league table, a performance they described internally as a “disappointing” season.

Baffour-Akoto, who holds a UEFA A Licence, has built a growing reputation in recent years, particularly after guiding Rospak FC to an impressive second-place finish in the 2024/25 Division One League season. His side accumulated 59 points, scored 50 goals, and recorded over 18 victories.

He has also previously worked with Crawley Town U-21 and Fort William, as well as serving as a video analyst with Ghana’s U-20 setup.

His tactical approach and emphasis on structured attacking football are believed to align well with Kotoko’s youthful squad, while his experience across different levels of the game is seen as an asset in managing a high-pressure dressing room.

Should he be appointed, Baffour-Akoto is also expected to bring strong recruitment influence and modern tactical ideas aimed at restoring Kotoko’s dominance in Ghanaian football.
