Despite being relegated to the surplus list by Prosper Narteh Ogum, the head coach of Asante Kotoko, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) has opted to retain the services of young midfielder Clinton Opoku, according a report filed by Kickgh.com.
Opoku, who is 20 years old, joined the club two years ago from the now-defunct Phar Rangers FC. His future with the Porcupine Warriors came into question when he was labeled as “surplus to requirements” by the new technical team led by Ogum.
However, an insider within the club has disclosed to Kickgh.com that the IMC has stepped in and disregarded the coach’s request to terminate Opoku’s contract. Instead, they are contemplating the possibility of sending the promising player out on loan to enable him to further his development elsewhere.
Opoku’s contract with Asante Kotoko is slated to run until the culmination of the 2025/26 season.
Opoku’s journey with Asante Kotoko has been hindered by unfortunate injuries that kept him sidelined for a considerable duration, ultimately leading to knee surgery. These setbacks have curtailed his opportunities on the field, with the young midfielder making a mere six league appearances for the team based in Kumasi.
At present, Prosper Narteh Ogum’s team is stationed in Beposo, engaging in an intensive pre-season training regimen in preparation for the upcoming 2023/24 season.
