It was a sobering night in Vienna as the Black Stars were comfortably beaten 5-1 by Austria in a friendly that exposed more questions than answers.
The warning signs came early. A lapse at the back led to a penalty calmly converted by Marcel Sabitzer, setting the tone for what followed.
Ghana struggled to impose themselves despite flashes of promise, particularly through Prince Kwabena Adu. After the break, Austria simply pulled away, striking twice in quick succession to take control.
Jordan Ayew briefly offered hope with a well-taken goal, but strikes from Carney Chukwuemeka and Nicolas Seiwald underlined the gulf on the night.
Beyond the scoreline, the performance offered clear talking points. Below are five things we learnt from Ghana’s defeat .
There is still a noticeable gap between potential and performance. Against a well-drilled opponent, Ghana looked short of cohesion, composure, and tactical clarity, all essentials heading into the FIFA World Cup.
Caleb Yirenkyi endured a difficult outing in an unfamiliar role. His positioning was exposed defensively, and his influence going forward was limited. It only reinforced the argument that his strengths lie in midfield.
Without Mohammed Salisu, the pairing alongside Alexander Djiku lacked assurance. There were moments of hesitation, poor communication, and ultimately, costly errors that Austria punished without mercy. Jonas Adjetey, who handled the ball for that penalty, looked out of place the entire game.
In a difficult night, Prince Kwabena Adu stood out. His movement unsettled the defence, and he showed a willingness to take responsibility in attack. It was a performance that warrants further consideration.
The absence of Mohammed Kudus was telling. There was little invention in the final third, with attacking moves often breaking down before they could truly threaten. Otto Addo probably tried to find a way around that by sticking to the traditional 4-4-2 set-up, however, the wingers in Antoine Semenyo and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku were simply missing in this encounter.
There are real cracks in this team which will definitely be explored by Germany on Monday. And Addo needs to find a solution really quick before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in just under 80 days.
