Auxerre defender Gideon Mensah has exuded confidence as his side prepares to host Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps on Friday.
Despite PSG’s unbeaten league record, Mensah believes Auxerre can cause an upset.
Speaking to Flashscore, Mensah reflected on Auxerre’s recent performances, which included a five-match unbeaten streak that ended with a loss to Toulouse.
“We had a good run of five games without defeat, and then we took our first loss last weekend, which was disappointing for us. But at the end of the day, we know it’s a long season, so there will be ups and downs,” Mensah stated. “Losses like this remind us that we need to stay focused because anything can happen during the season.”
Auxerre’s formidable home form, with 15 points from six matches, has bolstered the team’s confidence. Mensah credited their passionate supporters, adding, “Playing at home with our fans has always been our strength. Even if we struggle physically, the fans push us to do better.”
Reflecting on past encounters with PSG, Mensah highlighted Auxerre’s competitiveness on home soil. “Two seasons ago, we lost 5-0 in Paris, but the home game was much closer, ending 2-1. It showed we have what it takes to compete at home,” he noted.
Motivated by the challenge, Mensah is determined to change his fortunes against the Ligue 1 giants. “I’m very confident against PSG. Most of my motivation comes from playing against top teams. I want to end every negative streak in my career. Losing again to PSG is not something I’m looking forward to,” he said.
Auxerre’s hopes will also rest on the shoulders of in-form forward Hamid Traore, who has scored six goals this season. Mensah acknowledged Traore’s pivotal role, stating, “Hamid Traore has been one of our standout players this season. We need players like him to step up and make a difference.”
Auxerre will look to capitalize on their home advantage as they aim to stun the Ligue 1 leaders and secure a statement win.
