Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has put himself in contention for Ghana’s starting role ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding performance against South Korea.
Despite the Black Stars’ 1-0 defeat at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Tuesday, Asare impressed with several crucial saves, including a penalty stop, showing resilience under pressure.
The 33-year-old had missed Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup after arriving late to camp, raising questions about his ability to handle top-level competition.
Asare’s confident handling, sharp reflexes, and strong command of the penalty area reassured coach Otto Addo, especially in the absence of key defenders Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku. His display offered a bright spot for Ghana, which is still adjusting its squad and tactics during the Asian tour.
With the Black Stars preparing for the World Cup and the group-stage draw scheduled for December 5, Asare’s consistent form could provide a reliable presence in goal as the team finalizes its roster.
