The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially charged Berekum Chelsea head coach Samuel Boadu for misconduct following his actions after their MTN FA Cup semi-final defeat to Asante Kotoko on Sunday, May 12, 2025, at the TNA Park in Tarkwa.

According to the GFA’s regulatory update, Boadu has been cited for violating Article 12(1)(i) of the GFA Disciplinary Code (2019) and Article 34(6)(d) of the GFA Premier League Regulations (2019). These provisions pertain to misconduct and behavior that brings the game into disrepute.

Allegations Against Boadu

The incident occurred shortly after the final whistle of the tense semi-final clash, which Kotoko won to book a place in the final. It is alleged that Coach Boadu, visibly upset with the officiating, confronted the match officials in an aggressive and angry manner, directing fierce verbal protests and making inappropriate gestures toward the referees.

Eyewitnesses reported that Boadu had to be restrained by team officials as he charged toward the match officials. The alleged conduct, according to the GFA, “constitutes misconduct that brings the game into disrepute,” and has thus triggered disciplinary proceedings.

Deadline to Respond

The GFA has given Samuel Boadu until Thursday, May 15, 2025, to respond to the charges. His response could determine whether he faces a fine, suspension, or a ban from the touchline in future matches, pending the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings.

Background

Samuel Boadu, a former Hearts of Oak head coach who led the club to a domestic double in 2021, joined Berekum Chelsea in late 2023 and has since been working to restore the club’s competitive edge. The semi-final against Asante Kotoko was seen as a major opportunity for Chelsea to reach the final of the FA Cup for the first time since 2010, but their hopes were dashed by a late winner from the Porcupine Warriors.

Tensions flared throughout the match, with several contentious decisions by the referee drawing frustration from the Berekum Chelsea bench.

Possible Sanctions

Should the GFA Disciplinary Committee find Boadu guilty of the charges, he could face:

  • A monetary fine;
  • A suspension from the technical area for upcoming matches;
  • Or in severe cases, a longer-term ban from all GFA-sanctioned activities.
