Jan Gyamerah has received his first senior Black Stars call-up after being named in coach Carlos Queiroz’s 24-man squad for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
The 31-year-old right-back, who was born in Berlin, Germany, has been rewarded for his strong start to the 2026/27 season with German second-tier club SV Elversberg.
Although Gyamerah has previously featured for Ghana’s Black Stars B in a pre-World Cup friendly against Mexico, his latest invitation represents his first inclusion in the senior national team for a competitive international window.
Gyamerah’s promotion to the senior Black Stars comes after he established himself as an important figure at Elversberg. He has made four appearances for the German Bundesliga 2 side so far this season, with his performances attracting the attention of the national team technical team.
His call-up is also a significant moment in his career because of the experience he has accumulated in German football. Before joining Elversberg, Gyamerah played for several well-known German clubs, including Kaiserslautern, Nürnberg, Hamburger SV and VfL Bochum.
The defender has therefore spent a considerable part of his professional career competing in the German football system, and his latest opportunity gives him the chance to bring that experience to the Black Stars.
Gyamerah’s versatility and experience could provide additional depth to Ghana’s defensive options as Queiroz begins a new phase with the national team following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese coach has included a mixture of established Black Stars players, returning internationals and new faces in the squad, with Gyamerah and New York Red Bulls midfielder Ronald Donkor the two players receiving their first senior call-ups.
For Gyamerah, the invitation comes at a particularly important stage of his career. At 31, he has the opportunity to make his senior international debut after years of professional football in Germany.
His journey also adds another chapter to the long-standing involvement of Ghanaian players born or raised outside the country in the Black Stars setup. Born in Germany, Gyamerah has developed his football career largely within the German system, but he will now have the opportunity to represent Ghana at senior international level.
The immediate challenge awaiting him is a demanding AFCON qualifying schedule. Ghana will travel to face Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29.
The Black Stars will then travel to Morocco for an international friendly against the Atlas Lions on October 4. The three matches will give Queiroz an opportunity to assess his squad, while Gyamerah will be hoping to make a strong impression during his first senior national-team camp.
Gyamerah’s inclusion also creates further competition for places in Ghana’s defence, particularly at right-back. His club form has earned him the opportunity, but he will now have to compete with other defenders for playing time as the Black Stars begin their campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
For the Berlin-born defender, however, simply receiving the call-up represents an important milestone.
After years of club football in Germany and a previous appearance for the Black Stars B, Gyamerah is now officially part of Ghana’s senior setup and will be looking to turn his first call-up into his first senior appearance for the national team.
The call-up means Ghanaian supporters will have the opportunity to see what the experienced Elversberg defender can bring to the Black Stars as Queiroz continues to develop his squad for the next phase of Ghana’s international football programme.
