Desmond Offei, the coach of Ghana’s U-20 team, the Black Satellites, has expressed his team’s hunger for victory as they aim to clinch the gold medal at the ongoing 2023 African Games.
Following a hard-fought victory over Senegal on Tuesday night at the Accra Sports Stadium, the Black Satellites secured a spot in the men’s football final.
Coach Offei praised his players for their resilience and determination, highlighting their eagerness to claim the ultimate prize. He emphasized the players’ hunger and humility, indicating their readiness to give their all in the final match.
“The final is for the boys. In my opinion, the training is for us (coaches), the match is for the players. The job is done beforehand the boys are well prepared for this tournament, they keep growing and their mentality is incredible,” he said.
“They are very hungry, very humble so towards the final, it’s a final we are going to enjoy it 100 per cent,” he added.
Despite facing challenges during the match against Senegal, the Black Satellites remained steadfast and capitalized on their opportunity to secure the crucial victory.
Reflecting on the game, Offei acknowledged the team’s defensive solidity and efficient use of scoring opportunities. He commended the players for their clinical finishing, noting that they made the most of the chances they created.
“The first half, we didn’t create enough chances, not enough clear-cut chances but we dug deep, and eventually we got rewarded. My boys are not wasteful, we had one clear chance and we finished it. I can’t recall any part of the game where we squandered any chances,” he concluded.
With the finals against Uganda looming on Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium, Offei and his team are determined to maintain their momentum and claim the gold medal, further solidifying their status as contenders in the tournament.
