The head coach of Ghana’s national men’s football team, Chris Hughton, feels his team deserved to win after the Black Stars defeated Angola 1-0 in the first of two AFCON qualifiers for 2023.
Off from the bench, Antoine Semenyo took advantage of a loose ball in the penalty area to score the game-winning goal in stoppage time.
Hughton was adamant that his squad had performed well enough to earn three points, despite the displeasure of many of the spectators at the Baba Yara Stadium over the plodding victory.
“If you perform well enough, you have a chance of winning,” he said.
“If you score the goals particularly early in the game, you can take pressure off yourself. In the end, I think we deserved it, out of the two teams… I think we were better than Angola. Not so much more but I think we were better.”
Hughton will hope his players will turn up well when the two teams face each other again in Luanda on Monday, March 27.
