Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has announced that the prize money the Black Stars will earn for qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be paid into the country’s newly created Sports Fund.

Under FIFA’s expanded 48-team World Cup format, each qualified nation is guaranteed a minimum package of $10.5 million. This includes $9 million for participation at the group stage and an extra $1.5 million meant to cover preparation costs.

Explaining the decision, Kofi Adams said the expectation of World Cup income played a major role in the establishment of the Sports Fund. He noted that once the bill setting up the fund is approved and becomes law, revenues from international competitions will be properly managed through a structured system.

According to him, the $9 million prize money from FIFA will be paid directly into the fund, while the $1.5 million allocated for preparation will only be used for unavoidable expenses linked to the tournament.

The minister stressed that this approach will help Ghana make long-term investments in sports development. He said funds from the World Cup will be used in a planned and transparent manner, making it possible to build sports facilities and infrastructure that clearly reflect the country’s participation in the global tournament.

Kofi Adams also said the government is determined to ensure that Ghana’s appearance at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico leaves a lasting legacy. He explained that concrete projects would be showcased to show what the nation gained from taking part in the competition.

Touching on potential future earnings, the minister pointed out that Ghana could earn even more if the Black Stars progress beyond the group stage. Advancing to the round of 32 would attract an additional $3 million, while reaching the round of 16 would bring in a further $4 million.

He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well, stating his belief that the Black Stars can compete strongly and possibly reach the latter stages of the tournament if they deliver on the pitch.
