Bournemouth eye Ghanaian teen Josh Acheampong as defensive reinforcement

AFC Bournemouth are showing strong interest in teenage defender Josh Acheampong as they search for reliable additions to their backline.

The English-born Ghanaian talent has emerged as a potential target following a summer of key defensive departures at the club. With several of their regular defenders having moved on, the Cherries are looking to rebuild, and Acheampong has caught their attention as a promising alternative.

The 19-year-old recently completed his first season with Chelsea’s senior squad after signing a new long-term deal midway through the 2024/25 campaign. Promoted from the youth ranks at just 18, Acheampong made an immediate impact. He featured heavily in Chelsea’s successful UEFA Conference League run, starting most of the knockout matches before sitting out the final. He also appeared in the Premier League and the Club World Cup, racking up 14 senior appearances overall. Though primarily a right-back, he also proved dependable in central defense.

Chelsea are now considering sending Acheampong out on loan to gain more first-team experience, especially with stronger competition for places next season. However, the young defender is not yet sold on the idea. According to BBC reports, he is seeking assurance over consistent game time before agreeing to any temporary move. His priority is continued development through regular minutes on the pitch.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, are reportedly more interested in a permanent deal rather than a loan. With the club facing a shortage in central defense, a transfer including a buy-back clause could be a workable solution for all sides—allowing Chelsea to retain future rights to Acheampong, while the player gets a clearer path to first-team football in the Premier League.
