Bulgaria-based striker Bernard Tekpetey has earned a coveted spot in Chris Hughton’s provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The squad, unveiled on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, features familiar faces such as the Ayew brothers, Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey, Inaki Williams, and more.
Tekpetey, showcasing stellar form with Bulgarian giants Ludogorets over the past two seasons, makes a notable return to the Black Stars. The 55-man provisional list, submitted to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), offers Hughton the flexibility to finalize his selection by January 3, ultimately narrowing the squad down to the final 27 players for the upcoming tournament.
The former Schalke 04 striker, enjoying a prolific season with Ludogorets, boasts an impressive record of 11 goals and 7 assists in 32 games across various competitions. With two caps for the Black Stars since his 2017 debut, the 26-year-old aims to secure a spot in the final squad for the continental showdown next month.
Ghana, positioned in Group B for the 2023 AFCON, faces competition from Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars, with a rich AFCON history, seek to add to their four titles, the last of which came in 1982.
The tournament, set to commence on Saturday, January 13, will unfold its football spectacle until February 11, 2024.
