In a crucial encounter for Group D supremacy, Ghanaian champions Medeama SC fell short of seizing control as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Young Africans on Friday.
A victory for the Mauve and Yellows would have propelled them to the top of the group after three rounds, but the draw now places them third with four points. In the other group fixture, Egypt’s Al Ahly and CR Belouizdad played to a goalless draw.
Al Ahly’s five points secure their position at the top of the group, followed closely by Belouizdad and Medeama, both with four points each.
Medeama took an early lead in the 26th minute when Jonathan Sowah converted a penalty earned by Derrick Fourdjour. However, Young Africans swiftly responded, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 34th minute, with Pacome Peodoh Zouzoua capitalizing on defensive lapses.
Despite numerous opportunities in the second half, including a disallowed goal and a crucial save by Felix Kyei, neither side managed to break the deadlock, and the match concluded with a 1-1 draw, leaving both Medeama SC and Young Africans with a point each.
The upcoming weekend will see Medeama SC facing Young Africans once again, this time in the reverse fixture at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzania for their fourth group match.
