The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have voted in favour of FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, being re-elected.

CAF has endorsed Infantino for yet another term as president of world football’s governing body.

Infantino first took over in 2016 to complete the term of then-FIFA president Sepp Blatter, after he was suspended from the position.

In 2019, Infantino began his first full term as president after winning unopposed. Four years later, in 2023, he was re-elected for a second term in Kigali, Rwanda, again unopposed.

Having confirmed that he will run for another term from 2027 to 2031, CAF has stated that all 54 of its member associations agreed to support Infantino’s continuation.

A statement on CAFOnline read: “The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) held a meeting today, Wednesday 29 April 2026, in Vancouver, Canada on the eve of the 76th FIFA Congress and the CAF Member Associations unanimously agreed to support Gianni Infantino to be re-elected as President of FIFA for the period 2027-2031.”

Infantino has faced widespread criticism, particularly in relation to his relationship with United States president Donald Trump.

Trump has banned supporters of certain qualified teams from attending the World Cup in the US, including Haiti and Iran.

Moreover, Iran are now unlikely to compete at the World Cup due to hostility from the American head of state, who publicly said he would advise Iran against participating in the upcoming tournament.

Despite FIFA’s strong stance against government and political interference, Infantino has faced widespread backlash, with critics accusing him of ignoring the integrity of FIFA’s statutes to align himself with Trump, to the detriment of several teams that have qualified for the showpiece.
