The Confederation of African Football has paid tribute to Riyad Mahrez following his decision to retire from international duty, marking the end of a remarkable chapter for one of Africa’s most decorated modern footballers.

Mahrez, who captained the Algeria for several years, has called it a quit on international career after the sides’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

The experienced winger was in action when the North African outfit succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland on Friday morning.

Following his retirement from international football, the continental football governing body has expressed admiration and gratitude for the Algerian captain’s contribution to African football, highlighting both his achievements and lasting impact on the continent’s game.

“You gave us memories that time can never take away. Thank you, Riyad Mahrez,” CAF said.

The message quickly gained traction across the continent, with fans, former players, and analysts joining in to reflect on the impact of a player who consistently delivered on the biggest stages.

Mahrez’s story with Algeria evolved from a promising winger into the undisputed leader of the national team. Over the years, he became the creative heartbeat of the side, responsible for unlocking defences and producing decisive contributions in key matches.

His influence peaked in 2019 when he captained Algeria to glory at the Africa Cup of Nations 2019. That triumph remains one of the most significant achievements in Algerian sporting history, restoring pride and belief in the national team.

Across his international career, Mahrez accumulated 119 appearances, scoring 40 goals and registering 45 assists, cementing his place among the most productive attackers in African football.

The 2026 World Cup provided Mahrez with one last opportunity to represent his country on football’s biggest stage. Algeria’s journey ended in the knockout phase, a result that prompted reflection among players and supporters alike.

Shortly after the final whistle, Mahrez confirmed that he had played his last match for the national team, choosing to step aside after what he described as the closing of an era.

For many Algerian fans, the moment marked the end of a generation that brought both continental success and renewed global respect for their national side.

Beyond trophies and statistics, Mahrez’s legacy lies in how he transformed perceptions of Algerian and North African football. His rise from modest beginnings to European stardom made him a symbol of perseverance and technical excellence.

At club and international level, he became known for his elegance on the ball, composure under pressure, and ability to decide matches in an instant. Those qualities helped elevate Algeria’s standing on the global stage and inspired a new wave of young African footballers.

CAF’s tribute reflects this broader influence, acknowledging not only what Mahrez achieved for Algeria, but also what he represented for African football as a whole.

With Mahrez now retired from international duty, Algeria enter a period of transition. The national team must now move forward without its long-standing leader and most influential attacking presence of the past decade.

While his departure leaves a significant gap, it also closes a chapter defined by success, leadership, and unforgettable moments that shaped a generation of supporters.

As CAF’s message captured, Mahrez’s legacy will not fade with time. Instead, it will remain woven into the history of African football — a reminder of a captain who delivered memories that will endure long after his final match.
