Attacker Mohammed Kudus was unable to galvanize the Black Stars in their quest for victory during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, leading to disappointment for Ghanaian fans.

With regular captain Thomas Partey absent for the doubleheader against Sudan, the West Ham United forward stepped up as skipper, but his leadership could not turn the tide.

The 23-year-old was eager to guide the team to crucial wins; however, his efforts fell short. In the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium last week, the Black Stars were frustrated in a goalless draw, despite creating multiple scoring opportunities.

The return leg, held today, October 15, at the Martyrs of February Stadium, brought further heartbreak for the team. Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat, with goals from Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Abdelrahman in the second half sealing the victory for Sudan’s Falcons.

As a result of these disappointing performances, Ghana finds itself languishing in third place in Group F, having earned only two points from four matches. The Black Stars will look to salvage their qualifying campaign with two crucial fixtures next month, starting with a home match against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by an away encounter against Angola in Luanda.

With the team’s future at stake, it remains uncertain whether Kudus will retain his captaincy for these decisive games. The pressure is on for the Black Stars to bounce back and secure the results needed to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
