Former Ghana captain Charles Akonnor has ruled out any possibility of returning to coach the Black Stars following the exit of Otto Addo.
Akonnor, who previously managed the national team between 2020 and 2021, has been linked with the vacant position after the Ghana Football Association parted ways with Addo due to a string of poor results, including a 2-1 loss to Germany. However, the former coach has made it clear that he is not interested in the role at this time.
Explaining his decision, Akonnor emphasized his commitment to his current job at Gor Mahia, where he is focused on leading the team to success.
“I am with Gor Mahia. I’m very happy and doing well. We are fighting for the title, and that is where my focus is.”
He further stressed that despite his dedication to Ghana football, he has no plans to abandon his current project.

Akonnor’s stance highlights his desire for stability and continuity, especially as his side currently leads the Kenyan Premier League and is pushing to reclaim the title after missing out last season.
While he remains supportive of the national team, his priority remains firmly with his club, effectively taking him out of contention as Ghana searches for a new head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars will face England, Croatia, and Panama in the group stage.
