Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has revealed his ambition to become the chairman of Asante Kotoko, promising to restore the club to its former glory.
The outspoken politician and businessman admitted that his deep involvement with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has limited his ability to serve Kotoko in an official capacity. However, he remains confident that he will one day lead the club and transform it into a dominant force once again.
“Because of the NPP, sometimes I don’t serve as I’m supposed to, but I still contribute in other ways. But I know that one day, I will be Kotoko chairman. And when I become chairman, I will use money and aggression to make the team as great as it was under Herbert,” Chairman Wontumi said on Wontumi Radio, referencing former Kotoko chairman Herbert Mensah’s impactful tenure.
“We all saw what Herbert did, so I will apply all of that with a bit of pride. The level I will take Kotoko to, everyone will see. But just as Jesus told Mary, ‘It’s not my time yet,’ I will also say that it’s not my turn yet,” he added.
Despite his strong political ties, Chairman Wontumi has long expressed an interest in football.
In 2022, he made headlines after declaring his intent to buy Premier League giants Chelsea following Roman Abramovich’s decision to sell the club. However, his name did not appear on the final list of bidders, and Chelsea was ultimately acquired by an American consortium led by Todd Boehly.
