“It is a great disappointment”! These were the words of the Libya coach, Corentin Martins after his side’s 1-0 loss to Algeria on the opening day of the African Nations Championship, TotalEnergies Algeria 2022.
“We sometimes lacked energy. The goal woke us up. After conceding, we played a completely different game. We were sharper, more aggressive but lacked efficiency. At this level of the game, it is unfortunately not acceptable and you will get punished,” said Martins.
The coach also underlined the important role played by the home supporters in creating an intimidating atmosphere for the visitors.
“We expected this kind of atmosphere. I don’t think we prepared our players enough for such an environment. All my players play in Libya, and it is nothing like we experienced this evening”.
The Libya coach did however highlight that not all is lost.
“There is still lots to play for. We did have periods of good play that we can build on. It is not completely over as there are still two more matches for us to play.”
Libya will now prepare to face Mozambique on 17 January at the same venue in a 20h00 local time kick off.
